John Fisher

Picture of John Fisher Originally from Pennsylvania, now residing in Seattle, WA, has been involved in the Pageantry Arts in one form or another for the last 30+ years. John has performed with several drum and bugle corps including the 27th Lancers, the Madison Scouts, Harrisburg Westshoremen and Reading Buccaneers. He was on staff, in 1990 with the Troopers Drum Corp based out of Casper, Wyoming. John also has instructed and designed for many high school units throughout the US.

John currently is an equipment judge for WGI and a visual judge for Music for All (BOA). He also adjudicates for the Northwest Pageantry Association (NWPA), Northwest Association for the Performing Arts (NWAPA) and many other judging circuits throughout the United States.

Professionally, John is an Accountant.


Drum Major

Anna Quenemoen

Picture of Anna Quenemoen Anna Quenemoen has worked as a drum major instructor in the northwest for seven years. Her experience in the marching arts comes from five seasons with the Oregon Crusaders (2013-2017) and one year with the Seattle Cascades (2018). Her history with marching band began at Sunset High School (2010-2014) in Beaverton, OR. Anna enjoys working with drum major teams around the northwest in both conducting and leadership skills. She is a three-time attendee and one-time seminar leader at the Drum Corps International Leadership Summit.

Anna has spent the last several years finishing her schooling in special education and began her career in education recently for the Mount Vernon School District as a Resource Room teacher (2020-21). Currently, Anna works for the US Forest Service as a wildland firefighter. This will be Anna's third time judging drum majors at the HMBF and she is excited to return!

Ben Adams

Picture of Ben Adams Benjamin Adams has been actively involved in music education for 18 years. In 2004, Mr. Adams graduated from Florida State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education while studying the oboe. Currently, he is the band director at Glencoe High School. Mr. Adams moved to Hillsboro, Oregon in 2019 after leaving the area for 7 years. He returned to his home state of Florida in 2012 to pursue his music education career as the assistant band director at Fleming Island High School near Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Adams was an active member of FMEA and the Florida Bandmasters Association in which he received superior ratings with his concert bands at the district and state level. He served for 3 years as a regional representative for the Florida Federation of Color Guards Circuit and secretary for NWAPA. Mr. Adams continues to be an active member in associations such as NWAPA, NAfME, OBDA, and OMEA.

In addition to his involvement with music education, Mr. Adams is an educator for color guard and dance. He served as the artistic director for WGI Medalist Paradigm Winter guard, an organization he was involved in for 13 years. During his time in Portland, Oregon, Mr. Adams designed and choreographed for over six major organizations such as Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps and Evergreen High School under the direction of Steve Kuske. In addition, Mr. Adams was the designer for the Clackamas Dance Team which held the dance championship title for the state of Oregon in 2012 and 2013. In 2019 and 2020, he was a consultant for the University of Oregon Color Guard.

Steve Kuske

Picture of Steve Kuske Stephen Kuske is in his 26th year with the Evergreen School District in Vancouver, Washington. He served as Director of Bands at Evergreen High School for 18 years. The Evergreen Marching Band has garnered over 250 awards and trophies during Mr. Kuske’s tenure, and has won Northwest Marching Band Championship five times. In 2009, the Evergreen band was selected from 1400 applicants to march in the Barack Obama Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington DC.

Before coming to Evergreen, Mr. Kuske served as Director of Bands for three years at Fred C. Beyer High School in Modesto, California. During his tenure at Beyer High School, the group was selected to perform at the prestigious Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Chicago. The Beyer Marching Band, under Mr. Kuske’s direction, won first place at many festivals and competitions around the country, including the Bands of America Western Regional and the Western Scholastic Marching Band Championships in California.

Before moving to Modesto, he taught successful band programs in Eugene and Salem, Oregon. The Sprague Wind Ensemble from Salem, Oregon, under Mr. Kuske’s leadership, placed in the top three at the OSAA State Band Championships during each of his three years at the school. In Mr. Kuske’s last year in Salem, the Sprague Wind Ensemble was the Oregon State Band Champion.

Mr. Kuske is in demand as a guest conductor and band adjudicator. He adjudicated across the country. In the past, Mr. Kuske has been guest conductor of the Oregon State University Symphonic Band, the California State University Stanislaus Wind Ensemble and both the Salem and North Coast Adult Concert Bands.

Over the past years, he has been invited to speak at the Oklahoma, Arizona, Oregon and Washington State Music Educators Association Conventions, presenting on “Technology in the Music Classroom,” “Creating Success in Your First Years as a Band Director,” “Building a Successful Marching Band Program with Limited Resources,” and “Motivating Band Students.”

He has received three citations of teaching excellence from the Bethel, Salem/Keizer and Evergreen School Districts, but his proudest moments are those he spends with his wife and two sons.


Music Ensemble

Pat Vandehey

Picture of Pat Vandehey Patrick Vandehey is an Associate Professor of Music at Portland State University. Prior to taking the position at PSU he taught 14 years at George Fox University and 23 years in the Beaverton School District, 14 years at Aloha High School and 9 years at Westview High School. Mr. Vandehey received his Bachelors of Art and Bachelors of Music from the University of Washington, and a Masters of Teaching Music at Portland State University.

Mr. Vandehey is a Past-President of the Oregon Band Directors Association and serves as Committee Chair of the Adjudication Training Board of OBDA. He served for two years as the Band Liaison to the Oregon Schools Activity Association. He has served twice on the Oregon Music Education Association’s Board as Band Chair served on the OMEA Executive board as President in 2005-2006.

In 1993 Mr. Vandehey was the State, Regional and National recipient of the ASBDA- Stanbury Award for Outstanding Young Band Director. In 2000 he was inducted into the Band World Legion of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Also in 2000 he was named one of Oregon’s top ten Music Educators by the Oregon Music Educators Association in the Teaching Music Magazine. In 2002 Mr. Vandehey received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. He is a founding member of the Oregon Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, and in 2006 was inducted into the Northwest Bandmaster’s Association. Mr. Vandehey was named the Oregon’s Outstanding Music Educator in 2010 by OMEA.

Mr. Vandehey began his career at Aloha High School and from 1980 to 1994 built an award-winning program in concert, jazz and marching band. Aloha High School placed in the top three at the Oregon State Band Championships from 1990 to 1994 placing 1st in 1992. He moved to Westview High School when it opened in 1994. Under Mr. Vandehey’s direction all aspects of the band program excelled. The Westview Symphonic Band qualified for the State Band Championships each year of its existence and placed in the top three in the last six years of Mr. Vandehey’s tenure there, winning in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

The Band program at George Fox University grew significantly under Mr. Vandehey’s direction. In 2007 and 2009 George Fox was selected to perform at the MENC Northwest Convention. In 2008 and 2016 the George Fox Symphonic Band was the featured ensemble at the Oregon Music Educators Association conference. In 2010 the Symphonic Band was invited to perform at the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington.

Mr. Vandehey was the coordinator of Music Education at George Fox. Through the development of a comprehensive Music Education program the number of music education majors has grew from five in 2003 to 30 in 2010. Because of his work with the Music Education Curriculum, Mr. Vandehey was invited to be a presenter at the Society of Music Teacher Education at North Carolina University in 2007.

Mr. Vandehey has been Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Music Education for the last four years. PSU was a featured performer at the 2019 Northwest Regional Convention of the National Association for Music Education in Portland. PSU Wind Symphony also was a featured performer in the 2020 NAfME Convention in Eugene.

Mr. Vandehey is married to Kristin, his wife of 44 years and has two daughters, both of whom are educators.


Music Individual

Maggie Whiteman

Picture of Maggie Whiteman Maggie Whiteman is the director of bands at Eastmont High School in Wenatchee, Washington. Prior to this position, she graduated from Central Washington University with her Bachelor's in Music Education. Between marching and teaching, she has been involved in the drum corps and marching community for five years. This past summer, she worked as a Drum Major Technician for the Seattle Cascades. She has been a Drum Major Instructor for the Central Washington University summer Band Camp for two years. In college, she was conducted the Central Washington University Marching Band and the Seattle Cascades for two years. Maggie continues to work with high schools across the state as a marching/drum major instructor and is proud to be a part of HARVEST 2019!

Percussion

Jeff Bush

Picture of Jeff Bush Jeff Bush is a full-time percussion educator, arranger and visual designer based in the Portland,
OR area. He keeps an active private studio in drum set, concert and rudimental percussion. Jeff
attended the University of North Texas where he was a member of the PASIC Champion UNT Drumline in
1988 and 1990.

For over 30 years Jeff has served as a director of percussion for many award winning high school
and independent percussion programs around the Pacific Northwest. He established the Grants Pass HS
Indoor Ensemble starting in 1995 until 2002. Grants Pass HS became the first World Class Percussion
Ensemble in the Pacific Northwest. In 2009 he founded the Oregon Crusaders Indoor Percussion
Ensemble. Oregon Crusaders Indoor earned the 2009 WGI Independent A Class Gold Medal in their first
year of existence. In 2010 OCI was promoted to Independent Open Class and took home the WGI Bronze
Medal from the World Championships.

Jeff is currently the Director of Percussion for the Sherwood, OR School District and Mountainside
HS in the Beaverton, OR School District. The Sherwood Percussion Ensemble is the 3-time NWAPA Open
Class Champion from 2017 to 2019 and 2-time OSAA Concert Percussion Ensemble Champion in 2018 and
2019.

Jeff’s marching experience includes the Marauders and Blue Devils Drum Corps organizations. He has
served as the percussion caption head with the Marauders, River City Railmen, Seattle Cascades and
Oregon Crusaders Drum Corps.

Jeff is the co-founder of the Northwest Indoor Percussion Circuit which is now known as NWAPA.

Jeff is an Innovative Percussion Education Artist and the current Vice President for percussion for the NWAPA.


Visual Ensemble

Robby Rutherford

Picture of Robby Rutherford Robert Rutherford graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelors of Music Education, Bachelors of the Arts in Trumpet Performance, and Masters of Music in Conducting. During his time at CWU, he performed with and conducted all three concert bands, all three jazz bands, the symphony orchestra, as a soloist with the marching band, brass and trumpet choirs, and in various small groups. Notable performances include the 2015 NAfME conference with the CWU Wind Ensemble, as part of a trumpet ensemble at the National Trumpet Competition in 2013-2015, and with countless guest artists with the CWU Jazz Band I including Dick Oats, Wycliffe Gordon, and Bobby Shew.

Mr. Rutherford is also a proud alumnus of the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps of Concord, CA. He served as a split-lead trumpet player from 2012-2013 and was a soloist in the 2012 DCI World Championship season.

Professionally, Mr. Rutherford has performed with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus on the Legends and Out of this World tours around the United States. He has also worked as a high school band director at Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA and at Ellensburg High School in Ellensburg, WA. Lastly, he was on the brass staff for the Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps from 2014-2017. During this time, he often worked with high school bands in the Yakima and Seattle areas on visual and musical technique.

Currently, he is in his second year at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood, WA where he teaches 2 concert band, 1 jazz band, multiple jazz combos, and a drumline/percussion ensemble in addition to 5th and 6th grade beginning band throughout the Edmonds School District.


Visual Individual

Michael Tran

Picture of Michael Tran Michael Tran is currently in his fourth year teaching in the Lake Washington School District.

Prior to becoming a band director, Tran spent many years instructing, consulting, and coordinating numerous high school marching ensembles within the Washington State including, Mercer Island, Kamiak, Newport, Chiawana, West Valley (Yakima), Marysville Pilchuck, Eastlake, Cedarcrest, and many others. Additionally, he devoted three years writing for, coordinating, and instructing the Central Washington University "Wildcat" Marching Band in Ellensburg, WA. Michael graduated from CWU, earning his degrees in music education and psychology. During his enrollment, he performed in a varying array of instrumental and vocal ensembles and was extremely involved in the music program, serving as the NAfME Collegiate Senator, a position he held for three years.

Tran’s marching band experience began back in sixth grade in parade band. After four years at Sultan High School, Michael participated in the drum corps activity as a lead trumpet player at The Seattle Cascades and The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps. After serving his final year as a Head Drum Major in DCI, Michael returned to the Seattle Cascades as an administrator. In 2016, he was promoted to Executive Director and Corps Director. Under his leadership, the group would secure their highest score since 2007.

Michael is currently the Band Director at Inglewood Middle School, earning the LWSD Educator of the Year Award last year. He is also a Head Basketball Coach at the school, leading the girls team to their 10th district championship. Michael enjoys the opportunity to make an impact each day and is thrilled to be participating at the Harvest Festival of Bands!



Finalist Policy

Twelve bands from Preliminary Competition will be selected to participate in Finals Competition in the following manner:
  1. The 12 bands with the highest scores regardless of division will be selected to be in finals. Bands performing in the Novice and Exhibition divisions are not eligible for Finals.
  2. Bands perform in Preliminary Score order
  3. Caption Awards (Best Marching, Auxiliary, etc.) are awarded to the highest scoring band in Preliminary Competition
  4. An addiitonal set of caption awards for finals and finals trophies (12th through 1st will be awarded.
