Exhibition Division
The Buccaneer Marching Band
1:30 PM

Jon Conrad, Band Director

The recent hit movie has stirred renewed interest in this ground-breaking Broadway Classic. The familiar opening strains of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera contain original drill by Russ Newbury and percussion arrangements by Matt Larsen. The ominous music compliments the curvilinear drill through boisterous dynamic, stylistic, and key changes. Soloists include Adrianna Wieshaar from the color guard section, Patrick Knittle on mellophone, and trumpet duet and solos by Aureliano Rivera and Kyle Bacon.

This marching season debuts under the new direction of Jon Conrad. Conrad previously served on the athletic band staff at Washington State University in Pullman and holds a Master of Arts in Conducting.

Assisting Mr. Conrad are Assistant Directors Erich Mietenkorte, and Tom Noble. Color guard instruction is provided by Michael MacFarlane and Danielle Whitworth. Additional support provided by Angel Saucedo, visuals, and Geoff Smith, percussion.

Musicians of Davis High School routinely receive superior ratings at regional band festivals. Last year, the Buccaneer Marching Band placed third at the Sounds of Thunder competition. In 2010, the Davis music department capped an exciting school year of performances concluding with tours of New York City and Washington D.C. 2010 was especially rewarding for the Davis Percussion Ensemble who was awarded 3rd place at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

In years past, the Davis Percussion Ensemble has performed twice with the entertaining Blue Man Group. Invitations have been extended by the Blue Man Group to the Davis Percussion Ensemble to serve as an opening act. Every year the ensemble is well represented at the Western International Band Clinic in Tacoma, WA.

The upcoming school year holds in store a rigorous marching season and scheduled performances at Disneyland and California Adventure Park.

2010 Mt. Spokane Production: The Storm
I. The Arrival
II. A Momentary Calm
III. The Cloudburst
The 2010 Mt. Spokane production “The Storm” will depict the many manifestations of a thunderstorm. Beginning with a gorgeous sunny day, the mood is drastically changed by the arrival of a storm. After the storm’s destructive impact, we experience a momentary calm. A drizzling of rain falls from the sky, as we breathe a sigh of relief from the carnage of the storm. Just when we begin to feel safe and secure, the storm returns more violent and menacing than before. Booming thunder and hard rains force us to feel Mother Nature’s fury and wrath as we experience the cloudburst. Suddenly the havoc ends, revealing a glorious rainbow, teaching us that beyond the devastation there lies true beauty

Ram Marching Band
4:15 PM

Ron Gerhardstein and Matt Larsen, Band Director

The West Valley High School Ram Marching band is under the co-direction of Ron Gerhardstein and Matt Larsen. The high school instrumental music program includes wind ensemble, concert band, freshman concert band, two jazz ensembles, marching band, pep band, and beginning guitar. Additional staff for the marching band includes Nick Benson – visual design; Dollie Dunstan – color guard instructor; Chris Thomas and Erica Buege – visual instructors; Britt Dahlgrin and Aaron Julyian – percussion instructors; Erik Curley, Brian Beck, Kathy Kim, Maegan Ley, and Madelyn Banahene – brass and woodwinds. The marching band is led on the field by drum majors Max Archer and Linzy Mutch. The marching band’s 2010 field show, It’s About Time, has three movements – Clockworks, Living in the Past, and Running out of Time.   The music is composed by Michael Pote of Center X productions with percussion arranged by Michael McIntosh.

Musical material for the West Valley High School Ram Band’s 2010 field show, It’s About Time, is taken from the Westminster Chimes famous theme. The theme is presented in all three movements, most noticeably in the 1st and 3rd movements. Each of the three movements can be thought of as portraying the differing parts of one’s day: morning, afternoon, and evening. The show builds in intensity from beginning to end finishing with a frantic and dramatic sense of urgency. “You may delay, but time will not” - Benjamin Franklin

West Valley High School instrumental ensembles traditionally earn high ratings at adjudication and competitive festivals in and around the Pacific Northwest. Recent awards for the band program include 5th place overall at the South-Eastern Washington Cavalcade of Bands (2009), and 1st place AAA-large division at the Harvest Marching Festival (2009), Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival main stage performance (2010), and 2nd place AAA-division at the CBC Jazz Unlimited (2010). During spring break of 2011 members of the West Valley band program will travel to Los Angeles. The members of the Ram Marching Band would like to thank our parent boosters, school staff and administration, and our community for their wonderful support of music education in the West Valley Schools.
