Toppenish High School is thrilled to perform in the Harvest Marching Band Festival for the very first time. In fact, this is the first ever marching festival Toppenish has performed in in any recent history. From one performing ensemble of just 20 students 8 years ago, to 4 ensembles of over 80 students today, THS is a proud and growing program. The Wildcat band performed 2 years ago in Disneyland Theme Park, and has plans to return this year as well. The band was also privileged enough to get to perform at the WMEA All-State Music Conference last year. The band would like to thank everyone who has supported it along the way, including Superintendent John Cerna, Assistant Superintendent Jeanette Ozuna, Principal Shawn Myers, the TSD school board, and many others.

Please sit back and enjoy the journey, as we take you to a time long ago in a galaxy far far away...

An American Portrait, by Jeff Chambers

SHOW TITLE:
American Portrait

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
An American Portrait is a musical depiction of four episodes of American life. The first, titled Unity, depicts our history as being the world’s melting pot and, despite our fierce independence, we unite to be a world leader. The second movement, Peace, simply reflects our constant desire and pursuit of a tender peace for all our citizens. That quiet movement gets forcefully interrupted by Conflict. Although we are naturally a country of peaceful people, we are not afraid to fight for our rights, fight for the oppressed, and fight for liberty everywhere. The final movement, Freedom, honors those who have served and sacrificed selflessly to bring us our freedoms. We honor some of our Chiawana family heroes who have served to protect our freedom and safety by revealing their pictures in our final movement. We truly hope you enjoy An American Portrait.

Auburn Trojan Marching Band

Tony Paustian, Band Director

Music Selections:
Preshow
Two selections from Swan Lake
My Funny Valentine
Mirrors

The concept for this years Trojan Marching Band show revolves around the concept of, as the title suggests, reflections. Swan Lake tells the story of our darker side, the side we are not sure we want to see reflected back as well as the playful yet darkly comical aspects of our self. My Funny Valentine is a moment of self-reflection in which we become somewhat accepting of our darkness and begin to realize our beauty. Justin Timberlake's Mirror is an outward reflection of our true inner beauty being projected to the world. Our goal is to communicate the journey from the darker, intrinsic side of our soul to the extrinsic beauty we have to offer the world.

The Firebird is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.
The ballet centers on the journey of its hero, Prince Ivan. Ivan enters the magical realm of Kashchei the Immortal, with all of the magical objects and creatures of Kashchei.
While wandering in the gardens, he sees and chases the Firebird. The Firebird, once caught by Ivan, begs for its life and ultimately agrees to assist Ivan in exchange for eventual freedom.
Next, Prince Ivan sees thirteen princesses, with one of whom he falls in love. The next day, Ivan chooses to confront Kashchei to ask to marry one of the princesses; the two talk and eventually begin quarreling.
When Kashchei sends his magical creatures after Ivan, the Firebird, true to its pledge, intervenes,
bewitching the creatures and making them dance an elaborate, energetic dance: the "Infernal Dance."
The creatures and Kashchei then fall asleep; however, while Kashchei is bewitched, the Firebird tells Ivan the secret to Kashchei's immortality.
Ivan uses this new knowledge to kill Kashchei. With Kashchei gone and his spell broken, the magical creatures and the palace all disappear.

All of the "real" beings, including the princesses, awaken and celebrate their victory.

SHOW TITLE:

“HELIOS”

DESCRIPTION:
A significant turning point during the year - the days start getting shorter and the nights longer - the June Solstice is often associated with change, nature and new beginnings.
In ancient China, the summer solstice was observed by a ceremony to celebrate the Earth, femininity, and the “yin” forces.
In northern European countries, when the summer days are at their longest, and in the north it is the time of the Midnight Sun, festivals generally celebrate the summer and the fertility of the Earth.
The Fête de la Musique, also known as Make Music Day is an annual music festival celebrated on June 21 in 120 countries around the world.
Interestingly, most of the observance is not on the day as we reckon it, commencing at midnight or at dawn. It is customary for cultures following lunar calendars to place the beginning of the day on the previous eve at dusk at the moment when the Sun has set.
Join us as we celebrate Midsummer’s Eve, dawn the following morning and the Day of Litha.

The University High School Marching Band and Fanfare Ensemble would to take the time to thank the Central Valley School District School Board, Superintendent Ben Small, the University High School Administration and the Instrumental Music Parent’s Association for their continued support of all of the musical arts at University High School.
